July 2026
Monthly archive collection on The Daily Hue.
July taught me something I probably needed to learn sooner about curating The Daily Hue: art does not always have to be exciting. I often found myself searching for the next big, colorful, dramatic painting that would make a great daily puzzle. There is an instinct to choose artworks that would trick players into thinking something was one color when it was really another. But after doing this for a while, I started to realize that constantly trying to top the previous day's artwork can make the process feel more exhausting than enjoyable. July turned out to have plenty of color and energy regardless. Childe Hassam's *The Fourth of July*, Dale Chihuly's *Sunburst*, and Yamashita Kiyoshi's *Fireworks in Nagaoka* are naturally eye-catching, while works by Edward Hopper, Claude Monet, Georgia O'Keeffe, and David Hockney offer very different kinds of beauty. There are also quieter pieces like *Little Girl in a Blue Armchair*, *A Pomegranate, Siena*, and *Painter's Table* that do not need a dramatic subject to hold your attention. That became the bigger lesson for me. Art does not always need to be a battle scene, a fireworks display, or a painting filled with intense, saturated color. Sometimes it can just be a beautiful still life, a quiet landscape, a person sitting in a room, or a simple arrangement of objects. Those works can be just as interesting when you give them time to look. The Daily Hue is ultimately about color, and color exists everywhere. July was a reminder that I don't need to make every day bigger than the last. Sometimes a quieter painting is exactly what the day needs.
