About this puzzle

This is Guston at his most domestic and most self-incriminating. The table is basically a stand-in for the artist himself: the cigarette still burning in the ashtray, the stack of books, the palette streaked with color, all the props of a life spent alone in a studio. Nothing here is idealized. The objects are lumpy, outlined in heavy black, colored in flat slabs of pink and brown, like a child’s drawing that somehow knows exactly what it’s doing. Those stray nails jammed into the tabletop feel like they don’t belong, a little threat hiding among the clutter, which is very Guston: even his quietest paintings have something uneasy sitting just under the surface.
