Charles Sheeler (1883–1965) was one of the founders of American modernism, working across both painting and photography. He trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and got his start in commercial architectural photography before becoming known for Precisionism, a style marked by crisp lines, geometric clarity, and an almost machine-like precision, later most associated with his industrial subjects like the Ford Motor Company's River Rouge plant. "Geraniums, Pots, Spaces" (1923) is a watercolor that predates the industrial subject matter Sheeler is best known for, instead applying his precise, geometric eye to a quieter domestic scene of potted geraniums.
