About this puzzle
Barbara Brown (1932–2019) was one of Britain's most influential textile designers of the postwar era. After studying at the Royal College of Art, she became known for her bold, contemporary furnishing fabrics that helped redefine British interior design during the 1950s and 1960s. Her work embraced large-scale abstract motifs, clean geometric forms, and vibrant color combinations inspired by modern art and everyday life.
Designed around the 1960s, Viola exemplifies Brown's signature style. Rather than depicting flowers realistically, she distilled them into flowing, abstract shapes that evoke movement and harmony. The pattern was intended for interior textiles, demonstrating her belief that thoughtfully designed everyday objects could enrich daily life. Today, Viola is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum as an important example of mid-century British textile design and the era's embrace of modernism in the home.
