Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s *The Wedding Dance* is one of the best-known examples of his interest in ordinary people and everyday life. Bruegel worked in the Netherlands during the 16th century, a period when artists were increasingly interested in scenes outside the traditional subjects of religious and courtly painting. Although relatively little is known about his personal life, his paintings and drawings show a remarkable interest in farming, festivals, work, food, and village gatherings.
