About this puzzle
This vase and cover was painted by Thomas Allen for Minton around 1855, part of the factory’s mid century revival of 18th century Sèvres porcelain styles. The shift came largely from Léon Arnoux, the French chemist who joined Minton as Art Director in 1848 and steered the firm toward French and Renaissance inspired ceramics. Herbert Minton’s firm won a Council Medal at the 1851 Great Exhibition for work in this vein.
The bleu celeste ground, gilt scrollwork, pierced trelliswork neck, and painted cherub medallion all draw directly from Sèvres tradition, which Minton reproduced and adapted for English buyers who couldn’t obtain the originals. Allen worked as a figure painter at Minton from the early 1850s until 1875, and his cherub medallion here would have been a key selling point, bringing individual artistic skill to a piece otherwise shaped through factory methods. The vase’s ornate, pierced silhouette and layered gilding reflect the elaborate, collector-driven porcelain market of Victorian England at its peak.
