About this puzzle
In 18th-century India, a weapon's beauty was inseparable from its power. This dagger is wrapped in shagreen, the granular skin of a ray, and set with rubies, sapphires, and peridot along the guard. The blade carries gold arabesques and an inscription, and the handle ends in a carved jade finial. Objects like this one were diplomatic gifts and symbols of rank, as likely to sit in a treasury as to ever draw blood.
