About this puzzle
Yayoi Kusama is one of the world's most celebrated contemporary artists, known for her immersive installations, bold use of polka dots, and repetitive forms. Throughout her career, Kusama has explored themes of infinity, obsession, identity, and the subconscious. Her distinctive visual language grew from vivid hallucinations she experienced from a young age, which she transformed into paintings, sculptures, and installations that blur the line between fantasy and reality.
Created in 1994, Violet Obsession is one of Kusama's striking Accumulation sculptures. It features a rowboat and its oars completely covered in hundreds of soft, stuffed fabric forms, all painted a vivid purple. The familiar object is transformed into something playful, surreal, and slightly unsettling.
The repeated forms reference the phallus, a symbol that Kusama often used to confront ideas of power, sexuality, and fear. By covering the boat in these exaggerated shapes, she turns an everyday object into a humorous yet thought-provoking work that challenges traditional ideas of masculinity and authority. The endless repetition also reflects her fascination with obsession and infinity, inviting viewers to experience both attraction and discomfort at the same time.
